Introduction
True crime stories often reveal the darkest depths of human behavior, but some cases stand out due to their sheer brutality and the tragic loss of innocent lives. The story of Brian Lyndon Whitelock is one such tale that spans over two decades, highlighting a chilling pattern of violence and a system grappling with justice and rehabilitation. This post recounts the horrifying events involving Whitelock, starting with his initial crimes in 2000 and culminating in the tragic murder of Wendy Buckney in 2023.
The First Crime: The Murder of Nicholas Morgan and Glen Whitelock
Brian Lyndon Whitelock was born on February 28, 1967, in Clydach, Swansea. On October 13, 2000, a night of heavy drinking with his 27-year-old brother Glen and their 29-year-old friend Nicholas Morgan turned deadly. At Glen’s home on Portmead Avenue, Blaenymaes, Swansea, an argument erupted, and Whitelock fatally attacked Nicholas with a hammer.

In a desperate attempt to cover up the murder, Brian bought petrol, returned to the house, and set it on fire. Tragically, his brother Glen, who had fallen asleep, perished in the blaze, succumbing to smoke inhalation. Whitelock fled the scene, stole £1,000 from Glen, and fabricated a story about travelers starting the fire. However, forensic evidence and his own incriminating statements led to his arrest and subsequent conviction.

In court, Whitelock was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years for Nicholas’ murder and a concurrent 10-year sentence for Glen’s manslaughter. The judge condemned his actions, stating that the crimes caused intense pain to both families.
Release and Family’s Plea for Justice
In October 2018, Whitelock’s minimum term expired, and the Parole Board approved his release on January 2, 2019. This decision was met with resistance, as Nicholas’s family initiated a petition to prevent Whitelock from returning to Swansea. Despite garnering 1,413 signatures, the petition failed.
Reports surfaced of Whitelock’s temporary release before his parole, which deeply unsettled both families. In December 2020, his license was revoked after he assaulted a shop worker and committed criminal damage. Whitelock served additional time but was released again in October 2021.
The Second Crime: The Tragic Murder of Wendy Buckney
Wendy Buckney’s Life and Generosity
Wendy Buckney, a 71-year-old retired horse riding instructor from Clydach, was known for her kindness and community spirit. A beloved sister, aunt, and friend, Wendy had a heart of gold and devoted her life to helping others. After retiring, she moved into a flat on Tanycoed Road, where she became Whitelock’s neighbor.

Despite knowing his past, Wendy believed in second chances and even employed Whitelock for odd jobs. Tragically, her compassion would cost her life.
The Night of August 22, 2023
Leading up to Wendy’s murder, Whitelock’s behaviour spiralled out of control. Mixing excessive doses of diazepam with alcohol, he became volatile and erratic. On the evening of August 22, CCTV footage showed Whitelock entering Wendy’s flat. Hours later, neighbours reported unusual noises, but no one suspected the horror unfolding within.

The next morning, Whitelock emerged from Wendy’s flat covered in blood, confessing to her murder. Neighbors discovered Wendy’s brutalized body in her trashed living room. She had been stripped, stabbed, beaten, and subjected to unimaginable violence. The scene was described as one of the most horrific in recent memory.
Brian Whitelock’s Trial and Sentencing
After 27 months of delays, Whitelock’s trial began in November 2024. He claimed diminished responsibility due to alleged brain damage but failed to convince the court. Expert testimony attributed his behavior to substance abuse rather than any neurological condition.

The prosecution highlighted similarities between Wendy’s murder and Whitelock’s previous crimes, emphasizing his sadistic violence. The jury took just 30 minutes to deliver a unanimous guilty verdict. The judge sentenced Whitelock to a whole life order, ensuring he would never be released.
Family’s Statement and Reflection
Wendy’s family expressed their heartbreak and anger in a powerful statement, mourning the loss of a beloved woman whose only fault was her unwavering kindness. They emphasized the devastating impact of Whitelock’s actions and the lifelong void left by Wendy’s absence. The family also called for greater accountability within the justice system to prevent such tragedies.
